Polyurethane and Soil

Earthquakes can be destructive events for infrastucture.

Tipically, in civil engineering, it is studied how to avoid damage or collapse of structures by acting on the superstructure, ignoring the foundation soil.

An innovative method to protect buildings consist of inject or install slabs of polyurethane directly into the influenced ground of a structure.

Two ways to achieve this goal are injections through pressure pumps (especially important for historic buildings) or installation of polyurethane slabs (possible only in new buildings).

Our research group is focused on the following main topics:

Topics

Geotechnical seismic isolation of existing buildings through polyurethane injections

Influence of seismic response both with polyurethane injections and polyurethane slabs

Stabilization of soil foundation in terms of subsidence through polyurethane injections

Improvement of seismic energy dissipation by means of composite geosynthetic materials
